Area 51 Sculpting Competition

This started Sunday 8th April 2007 and ended Sunday 8th July 2007. Why 8th July? Check out the competition details and see. I will give you a clue.... it is the 60th Anniversary of a well-known but much denied event in New Mexico. So sort of a commemorative sculpting competiton really !

UPDATE: 22nd November 2007. Better late than never...due to the arrival of Luke everything got delayed so finally we have managed to get all of the pics online and the judging has been completed. Congratulations to the winners in each category (shown below) and for a full listing of the pics in each category then just click on the links.

Many, many , many thanks to all who participated. It was a nail-biting finish with some very close scores. I personally couldnt believe the level of entries and i know if we have some spare cash in the HF coffers after the december sale that we will be trying to grab some of the non-winning entries for the 'White Metal' range.

Competition entries

As you are aware there were 5 categories for this competition so i have broken the entries up into their respective categories and as there were far too many to put them all on one page i have set up 5 different pages which should make browsing easier. Just click on the title links below and the page will open in a new browser window. There is a topic on the Forum of Doom where you can comment on the entries should you wish.

How did we judge them?

We had the following judges .. Sally White (Libertee, thats me!) , Kev White (chief sculptor, father extraordinaire and short Essex bloke), Debbi (Sabbat Wolf ... long time metal addict and my right hand woman), Andy Foster, greenstuff pusher and mega cool sculptor for Heresy Miniatures, Andy Dickinson (Cypher226 .. self-confessed metal addict), Knut Heykana, big boss man at CeltosLegion in Germany (we had to have him as the competition was his idea so it only seemed fair !), Adam Clarke, greenstuff pusher at Black Scorpion Miniatures and Steve Buddle (sculptor and painter ) of Spyglass.

We also managed to grab the views of quite few paint slaves including Ben Brownlie, Peter Bell (Avicenna), and Craig Nunn (Reaperman),

Each judge had access to all of the images in each category and awarded points for their personal favourites with 3 points going to the first choice, 2 for the second and 1 for the third. All points from all of the judges were then amalgamated to find the winners in each category. Judging has been based upon how well the brief had been stuck to, the sculpting and how castable the entry was, how commercially viable the entry was and general appearance of the figure.

Many thanks again to everyone who participated and gave their time and effort to making another successful HF sculpting competition. It isnt all just about winning the competition but it is also a way for amateur sculptors to show their skills, some of the judges were quite surprised at the skill level of the amateur entries with the youngest entrant being a young teenager from Iceland ...and the oldest?....well i had best not say!

First Hf sculpting Competition winners

What a hard decision. Seriously hard. The overall standard for both talent and imagination was excellent. We had a total of 38 entries from both professional and amateur sculptors. At the close of the competition I edited and labelled the images of each entry so that they were anonymous and placed them in a secret section of the FOD for the judges to comment on and choose their favourites. I was the last to decide as i really couldnt make up my mind!
In the end we chose a 1st and a 2nd place. There were also 3 others that kept us pondering, and at least 8 others on top of those that we would have liked. Told you it wasnt easy!!
The winners and runners-up are listed and shown below as small images with Kevs comments underneath. Click on each to take you to another page where you can view other judges comments.
I have also formatted a page with all of the other entries on it. I have had to reduce the size of some of them so they load easily but if you want want larger views then please just let me know

1st Place

Orc Pirate by Sylvain Quirion

Kev says ' W: Very cartoony, but something about him appeals to me. The face is great and the bat (and what's that in the rope?) is a very nice touch. Nice cloth, good costume, well posed. Slightly worried about castability.. '

2nd Place

click Stalks to go to the winners page

STALKS by Michael Thorp

Kev says: ' 1: I love this guy. He's the kind of thing I imagined appearing when I wrote the brief for the competition. Good GS control, nice details, cute factor. Smashing! '

Close on the heels of STALKS was this little chap by Alex M. I personally like him very much.........i think it is something to do with the attitude!

Gobbo by Alex M

Then came these two dastardly looking scoundrels..

Patrick Keith and Ben Siens

All of the images plus Kevs and any judges comments can be found HERE

All that remains to be said now is a very well done to all who entered. It takes a lot of guts to enter anything in an online contest where your creations are subject to the comments and criticisms of all and sundry who happen to be browsing the pages. Showing work is a very scary and personal thing and it scares the hell outta me so you all have my complete admiration.

If you didnt win, then please dont give up. Something that this competition has shown us all is that there is a wealth of talent out there just waiting to be developed. Dont be surprised if some of the other entries end up being cast at a later date. Keep at it, lots of practise and try again next time. The Forum of Doom is a fantastic place to seek developmental criticism as it holds a wealth of talent not just in its resident professional sculptors but also a lot of its members.

Thanks lots

Sally :)

Frothers Unite 2005, Female minis

Held at The Frother UK contest link. This competition closed August 2005 and the subject matter for this year was 'Female minis that a woman would buy' and to ensure this was adhered to, the judging panel was entirely made up of female professionals from within the industry.

Kev entered two figures, 'Miranda' and 'Swimsuit Libby'. To try and cover up the fact that Miranda was his sculpt, he based her completely differently to the rest of the HF stuff and also i altered the camera settings and background so that it was unrecognisable. It worked, most people didnt know that she was his!

Kev won first place in both of the categories that he entered. Miranda won 'Fantasy Women' and Libby won 'Sci-fi/Modern women.

As with last years competition, Frothers reserve the right to produce these figures for sale for two months from the end of the competition. After that time the rights revert back to the sculptor, and i can only assume that they will then join the rest of the HF girlies!

Just a little note: Klute won an honourable mention in the category that Miranda won for his figure 'Melissa, pregnant warrior'.

Sculpt a pirate today!

Lots more details at The Forum of Doom. This competition is all about you guys designing an addition to our 'Pirates' range.

As Kev says
'Here's the deal....I want a new pirate to join Pirate Kjaran in the HFP range, but haven't had the time to do one myself.
As a result, you, yes You, dear reader, have the chance to get one (or possibly more) of your sculpts in to the Hasslefree family and get paid for your efforts in the very first....
Hasslefree Miniatures, 'Make me a Pirate' Sculpting Competition.
Think Steampunk..... Think Treasure Planet..... Mix it with Mos Eisley..... and you'd be close to what I want. The term 'Pirate' is possibly slightly misleading, don't let that restrict you. You can sculpt anything you want so long as it fits in the rules of the competition and loose set of aesthetics I've described.

Introduction

So what’s this all about then? In a nutshell, you and a lot of others send me photos of your finished green and Sally and I and the Judges will pick the best/loveliest/smartest and put the mini into production. We have some really good amateur sculptors on this forum already, it might be the chance they need to get their skills brought to the attention of the rest of the industry.

Entrants will need to agree that Hasslefree will have the rights to manufacture the "best" miniature/miniatures. You as the winner get some money out of it, eternal fame, an introduction to the industry and we as a company receive the ‘rights’ to the mini. I invest in a mould (see 16 below) and I can make copies of the thing and sell it.

The nitty gritty rules are here

So what are you waiting for?? Keep an eye on the thread at the The Forum of Doom for the latest developments.

First annual Speed Painting Competition

Golden Ogre!.....lol

Held at Bifrost 2005 on Sunday 3rd July 2005 in Birmingham.

The winner of the Gold Axenarf was Andrew Starling with his speedily painted version of HFH001 Libby. An hours work brought him £30 worth of nice shiny metal to take home and paint at his leisure. Well done Andrew!

Ready.....Steady....

Ready........Steady.....

GO!!

GO!!

It was to be the first public appearance of the 'Golden Axenarf'.....absolutely no link whatsoever to the famed 'Golden Demon' awards............prolly because Axenarf is an Ogre not a Demon but that is neither here nor there!
