Scrap bases by Sonny Bundgaard

Step 1: Making the base

The base is build up of bits of plasticcard of various thicknesses and shapes, which are cut, filed and brutalized with a rusty shear. Once these are fitted to cover most of the base, I add extra bits of junk like the Hasslefree tab and whatever looks suitably industrial. The base is given a solid coating of black spray paint.

Step 2: Basic colour

The base is painted boltgun metal and given a wash of black ink, to define the shape. I drybrushed the edges with chainmail before going to the next stage.

Step 3: Weathering

At this stage I apply several layers of inks and thinned paint glazes. The precise colours can be varied depending on the desired look, for the base in the photograph I used mainly - chaos black - Vallejo smoke - Tamiya clear orange (or orange ink) for a rusty, oilstained look.

Step 4: Re-highlighting

The inking is applied roughly allover the metal, to shape the colour, but to redefine the metallic look, I drybrush the base with chainmail and mithril silver.

Step 5: More dirt

I then paint on another couple of layers of ink, but this time I concentrate the colour towards the centre of the metal to keep the contrast strong, with only a couple of glazes covering the entire base, just to tie it together.

Step 6: Finishing touches

I re-highlight anything I want to bring out, in this case the Hasslefree tab, and paint the edge of the base black. The industrial pattern is painted black, stripes added with bleached bone, and painted over with glazes of orange/yellow ink. When this is dry, I apply some more weathering to the design, so it wont look out of place.
